Let Massage Help Your Baby and You
Every mother wants what’s best for her baby, and it’s a well-known fact that being a parent is the hardest job in the world. That’s why The Well For Women offers an Infant Massage Series. Each series lasts four weeks and lets mothers and their babies bond and socialize with each other.
It’s also a great way for a mom to learn how to read her infant’s communication cues, which is an important aspect of massage. Your baby will tell you which strokes she (or he) likes or dislikes, and when she wants the massage to end.
Baby massage is gentle, rhythmic stroking of your baby's body with your hands. You can use oils or a moisturizer to help your hands to glide smoothly over her skin. As part of your massage routine, you can gently manipulate her ankles, wrists and fingers. You can talk softly, hum or sing to her while you’re massaging, which may reassure your baby.
Massage can benefit your baby in a multitude of ways. It may help your baby to develop mentally, socially and physically; stay relaxed and not get upset; cry and fuss less; and sleep better. One study found that massage could help newborns to recover from jaundice more quickly. Another upside is that giving your baby a massage lifts your mood and helps you to feel more empowered as a parent. The time you set aside for a massage can be your special time together. As you massage your baby, it comes naturally to talk to and have plenty of eye contact with her. Massage can also enhance oxygen and nutrient flow to your baby’s cells, as well as improve her breathing patterns and the health of her lungs. It can boost the release of hormones, including growth hormones to help with weight gain, and spark neurons in the brain to grow and branch out, which improves mental-processing skills.
